Why IIT Has Become a Viral Topic in India  Especially Among Students

Nowadays, the word IIT has become something that everyone recognizes — even first-grade students in some schools. IIT stands for Indian Institute of Technology. There are 21 IITs in India, and two of them have foreign campuses as well.

These are India's premier institutions, known globally and competing in terms of educational quality, infrastructure development, and research amenities, all coordinated with the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

IIT Foundation—Starting From School

The word “IIT” is introduced as early as sixth grade in many schools through a program called IIT Foundation. But the truth is, most children don't even understand what the IIT syllabus means or what IIT actually stands for.

They are just made to study it with the assumption that it will help them in 12th grade, even if it’s not relevant to their current class.

Where Do IITs Stand Among Other Institutions?

If institutions in India are classified into government and private, then IITs definitely top the list of government institutions — but only in the technology and science domains. They don't offer much in arts or other disciplines that are non-technical.

Back in the time of India's independence, there was a need for world-class educational institutes. That’s when the Government of India came up with the idea of IITs. However, for a long time, these institutions were less popular, especially with the rise of private institutions.

Government Action and the Rise of IITs

Since the IITs were always in the eyes of the government, appropriate action plans were laid out to improve their standards. Eventually, other government institutions like NITs and IIITs were also introduced to match the level of IITs.

But here’s the catch — the development in infrastructure, teaching methodology, and research has always been stronger in IITs, thanks to the Council of IITs, which acts as the regulatory authority for all IITs.

In contrast, other institutions are governed by different government agencies or special committees under the Ministry of Education.

Strict Norms, Strong Alumni, and Placements

The Council of IITs ensures that strict norms are followed across all IITs for the progressive growth of students and institutions. Being old institutions, they also have a strong alumni network, which contributes to campus development, funding, and placement support.

A Benchmark in Education and Labs

The educational standards and lab facilities in IITs have set a benchmark for many institutions in India. With a fully developed curriculum, skilled manpower, and advanced resources, IITs have gradually built a strong reputation in the country.

The IT Boom and IIT’s Popularity

When the IT boom hit India, tech companies looking to hire the best talent naturally turned to IITs. That’s how the IT revolution helped bring IITs into the spotlight again—thanks to the excellent placements they’ve consistently delivered over the decade

Is IIT Still the Only Option?

While IITs remain premier institutions, there are now many competing institutions, including NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutes.
