IIT PLACEMENTS: THE TOUGH TRUTH VS. HYPED NEWS—WHAT YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW
Each year, when the placement season starts at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), social media and dailies burst with headings
IITian gets ₹2 crore job! 100% placements made in top IITs!
It all sounds so lovely, right? But here’s the unspoken truth that no one tells you initially: The reality behind IIT placements is much more nuanced than what’s portrayed in the media or on institute websites.
So let’s go deep—no sugar coating, no PR tales—pure raw reality that every aspiring student has to know.
The 100% Placement Myth—What’s Behind It?
All IITs quote “100% placement” for some of their branches or programs.
But go ask any IITian, and they’ll say to you:
– Not everyone gets placed.
- Some are told to leave campus if they’re not placed after a certain time.
– “Double offers” (same student placed twice) are usually double-counted to make figures look better.
Why Do Even IITians Remain Unplaced?
It comes as a shock to many, but yes, even IITians find it difficult to get placed sometimes.
- Shortage of Practical Skills
– Most students focus only on theory and marks. But solving problems practically is what employers seek. - Soft Skills or Communication are not up to the mark
– Good programming, lousy self-confidence = rejection. The world today requires teamwork, leadership, and communication. - Incorrect Branch Choices
– Core disciplines (such as civil or metallurgy) generally receive fewer job offers than computer science or ECE. - Unclear Career Orientation
– Certain students are confused about whether they should pursue a job, MS, startup, or UPSC—so they lose out on targeted preparation. - Absence of Internships & Projects
– Resume with no actual experience? It just won’t do anymore.
The Reality Behind High Packages (The ₹2 Crore Jobs)
Yes, it is true that some students do receive insanely high packages. But the reality is
- All of those offers are either from foreign companies or come with cost-to-company (CTC) figures, not salary paid home.
- Only the top 1–2% (typically CS graduates with top competitive coding ranks) receive them.
- The median salary for the majority of IITians is usually ₹12–₹18 LPA, sometimes lower even for core branches.
What Students Should Actually Do: The Skill Equation
If something determines your placement today, it’s not the IIT tag—it’s this:
SKILL + EXECUTION = EMPLOYABILITY
Here’s what really counts:
1. Practical Skills > Theoretical Marks
- Learn to code, data structures, design, Excel, product thinking, and marketing based on your objective.
- Study not just to pass—study to solve.
2. Communication + Confidence
- Interview practice, mock presentation, storytelling.
- Learn to sell your ideas before selling your degree.
3. Internships & Projects
- Complete at least 2–3 internships until you graduate.
- Do side projects, open source, startups, or freelancing work.
4. Read. Build. Talk. Repeat.
- Read industry trend books.
- Build your own profile: blog, LinkedIn, GitHub, Behance—whatever is relevant to your domain.
- Talk to seniors and alumni. Their path will teach you more than your books.
Placements are not assured, even in IITs.
But growth is assured if you concentrate on acquiring actual skills and being persistent. Your degree opens the door, but your skills determine how far you walk.
Therefore, yes, dream of the IIT label, but don’t limit yourself to that.
Watch the placement trends, learn what top jobs require, and prepare for the real world — and not merely the next exam.
